According to many renowned sources, China is infamous for its notorious activities, especially, when it comes to making fake products. From cabbage to eggs and now rice, this country has spared no expense in playing with the health of people. It has been over four years that fake rice or plastic rice was found to be circulating in the market and making people sick.
Find out more about this fake rice and some tips to help you distinguish between the original product and its plastic clone.
The origin of fake rice.
China has been producing and even circulating fake rice for four years now, and it is still on the rise. They make this rice with such dexterity that it is next to impossible to differentiate between the real and fake rice.
How was the fake rice scam identified?
The fake rice production came to light when China started selling it in different parts of the world.
Where is it being sold?
This plastic rice has been found in the markets of India, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Fortunately, in some countries like Malaysia, the market is under a high control, and fake rice failed to make its way into the shops.
What is it made of?
Fake rice is made from potatoes, sweet potatoes, plastic or synthetic resin and even some toxic chemicals to bear such a striking resemblance to the real rice.
How are the Chinese fooling people into buying fake rice?
Wuchang rice is quite popular for its pleasant smell and hence is more expensive. In order to fool people and draw higher returns, a small amount of real Wuchang rice is mixed with fake or plastic rice and sprayed with a fragrance to mimic the smell of the popular Wuchang rice. This is then packaged like normal rice and shipped across China. Reports show that 800,000 tons of real Wuchang rice is produced annually but 10 million tons of it is sold, whether plastic or any other kind of rice. You will be shocked to know that out of this, 9 million tons rice is fake! This is alarming!
How harmful is it?
The health hazards of plastic are not hidden, and consuming rice made from plastic can have adverse effects on your health, especially your digestive system. Daily consumption of fake rice can even prove fatal. In short, it is nothing but a slow poison…
How to distinguish between fake rice and original rice?
Though the look and feel of the plastic rice is exactly same as the real one, there are certain tricks or tests you can perform at the ease of your home to find out if the rice you have bought is fake or real. Mentioned below are six fake rice tests…
The float test.
Pour a tablespoon of rice in a glass full of cold water and stir. If the rice floats on the top, it means it is plastic rice.
The burn test.
Burn a handful of rice on the floor. If it catches fire and emits a plastic smell, it is a clear sign that the rice is synthetic and not real.
The cooking test.
Fake rice remains hard even after being cooked whereas the real rice becomes soft after losing its raw form.
Boil a little rice in water and observe it in the process. If it forms a thick layer at the top of the pot and doesn’t change its form, then understand that you are dealing with fake rice.
The fungus test.
Cook some rice and keep it in a warm place for around three days. If fungus doesn’t begin to show on the rice, then it is plastic rice because plastic is unaffected by the temperature or weather.
The hot oil test.
Drop some rice in a pan of real hot oil; if the rice sticks together or melts or settles down at the bottom, it is a clear indication of the rice being fake.
These tests are extremely simple and can be conducted in the comfort of your home. Always check whether the rice you are consuming is real or fake and no matter what, do not consume the plastic rice if you care about your and your family’s health.
